Dumbbell squats: You’re doing it wrong

  1. That’s done so the lifter will be forced to perform the lift with proper form.
It keeps the centers or gravity in one spot so u can’t cheat

A quarter squat with 40lbs standing on top of dumbbells is not proper form. If you need to do this to visualize how to push against the floor with your feet, you shouldn’t be doing squats at all. Better stick with the bosu ball and work on your “core”.

  9. If the platform(s) he was standing on were long enough to support the full length of his feet, then I could see some minor merit in this exercise for someone who is really out of wack re balance; but the dumbbells only support the arch area of his feet, which is not going to teach him how to use his feet correctly at all.

  19. funny a lot of people saying its “meat-head” or douchey, just because most of you all don’t actually work out. You’d be surprised at the different techniques and workouts athletes do to train every muscle in different areas. Him only squatting 50lbs makes it toolish. Don’t knock a workout.

  21. I don’t agree this deserves to be here. I would never do this but there are a lot of weird methods of lifting weights that work. I think this is better than some idiot Guido who has a well developed upper body but has skinny legs because he his leg day sucks. Example are the guys that pack on over 400lbs on squat but can’t even do a real squat. Instead, they do a quick 20deg squat and no more. Instead of caring if anyone is watching, why not do a real deep squat with 225 or something? I can assure you that people are not watching nor do they care. When I learned weight lifting in my teens, it was at a small private members only power lifting gym. The owner was a big fat old retired power lifter who corrected my first attempts by showing me a deep form squat. He was in his 60s but still had it! At least this kid knows his limit on sets. Other power lifting techniques would seem weird in normal gym; attaching chain to bench press bar so it gets heavier as chain gets longer…

I am 30 with a new house, wife, and a 1.5 year old and 3 week old son. No more time for gym and I’m happy about that. Too many losers and tough guys …I can’t stand the gym these days.
